Singapore-Shanghai Financial Forum to Improve Cross-Border Relationships

Singapore hosted the 3rd Singapore-Shanghai Financial Forum this week helping to strengthen relationships in the region; over 200 participants were in attendance; the theme of the event was "Strengthening Singapore-Shanghai Collaboration in a Changing Financial World Order" and discussions were centered around deepening financial connections between Singapore and Shanghai; Jacqueline Loh, deputy managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, was a featured keynote speaker at the event and spoke about the opportunities for fintech collaboration in the region. China Merchants Bank Revises Rules for Hong Kong Bank Accounts

Bank account applicants must now have assets at the bank averaging 5 million yuan ($730,000) per day over the past three months, this threshold is an increase from 50,000 yuan ($7,280); the changes are being enacted to help restrict capital outflows and ease depreciation of the yuan; sources also report that the Bank of China has taken steps to set additional terms for restricting capital outflow; China Construction Bank and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China have reported they have no intention to implement similar rules.  Source

China’s Central Bank Increases Digital Currency Efforts

The People's Bank of China is reportedly ramping up efforts to create a digital currency that would coincide with their paper currency; the currency released by the People's Bank of China will be legal currency and make use of special encrypted technology; there has been an effort within the central bank to create a digital currency since 2014; problems related to the right technology and deployment of the currency have persisted.  Source

RateSetter Australia Appoints New Board Director from ING Direct

RateSetter Australia is one of the country's leading P2P lenders, introducing the first P2P lending platform in the country for retail investors in 2014; the company has announced a new addition to its Australian board of directors which serves separately from its parent company RateSetter UK; Vaughn Richtor will join the board bringing significant retail banking experience from his role as CEO of ING Direct; Richtor will help advise the company in key initiatives including improving alternative banking channels and growing market share in personal and business loans.  Source

CoinTribe is using advanced credit modeling to provide online lending to small and medium-sized businesses in India; it also offers personal loans; its services are leading the marketplace for small and medium-sized businesses; company provides an online marketplace for loans and also offers platform as a service digital technology to banks; CoinTribe has been originating loans since March 2016; has raised $3 million in funding and has plans to raise another $10 million to $15 million in the near-term.  Source

WeBank’s Loan Amount Exceeds RMB100bn

A WeBank employee wrote a post in WeChat Moment, announcing that the loan amount of Weilidai (WeBank's micro loan product) is over RMB100 billion ($14.92 billion); Weilidai's loan amount has increased almost 300% over the past seven months; according to its financial results, WeBank lost RMB583 million ($86.97 million) in the first year (2015); but in 2016, it made a profit of RMB401 million ($59.82 million); in the first four months of 2017, WeBank made a profit of RMB500 million ($74.59 million); in terms of product, WeBank has launched an enterprise-grade product, "Weiyedai"; Weiyedai provides unsecured loans of up to RMB3 million ($447,507) to enterprises, with annual percentage rates ranging from 10.95% to 16.43%. Throwback Thursday: Robots Expected to Run Half of Japan by 2035

Predictions in 2015 estimated that within 20 years half of the jobs in Japan could be done by robots; the Nomura Research Institute worked with Michael Osborne in 2015 to study 600 jobs in Japan reporting that 49% could be replaced by computer systems; since the 2015 predictions there has been a continued trend toward artificial intelligence with Japanese insurance company Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance releasing one of the first public announcements on artificial intelligence replacing a significant portion of workers in its payment processing department in January 2017.  Source
